Hook: Crystals

Our Writing Hook this week is Borax Crystals. First we watched this video to learn how to make them.

Then we looked at one Mr Horn made in the weekend.

Next we made our own crystals and generated our language and words about the crystals for our writing this week.

The crystals need to grow overnight, check back later to see how they look, and of course, next week you will be able to check our Writing Shows for our published crystal stories.

PB4L - Classroom

This week our PB4L Values Lesson is on the Classroom!

To show our CARE Values in the Classroom we...

COMMUNITY

  • Be aware of others
  • Clean up after yourself
In this video Mr Horn is NOT showing his Community Value, Oliver is going to come and tell him what he SHOULD be doing...

ACTIVE THINKING

  • Contribute to class and group discussion
  • Use your time wisely
Look at all these people contributing to our discussion and showing theit Active Thinking!

RESPECT

  • Use appropriate language, keep hands and feet to yourself
  • Listen to and respect others opinions
  • Respect your own and other right to learn

In this video Mr Horn is NOT respecting Datsyn's or Max's right to learn...

But in this video Sasha IS respecting Datsyn and Max!

EXCELLENCE

  • Follow book standards
  • Know your learning goals

Hook: Popcorn

Last week our writing hook was all about popcorn, we started with this video to learn about why popcorn pops. We skipped ahead to 2.45 to see the steam burst out of the kernels. We now know that the key to making popcorn changes is... Heat!

We then popped and tasted our own popcorn.
Before heat...

After heat!

Check back on our writing slideshows next week to see our published popcorn writing. To get to our writing shows, click on any one of our faces at the top of this blog to go to our eportfolio.

PB4L: Playground

Our PB4L lesson this week has been about playing in the playground. Here are some of the things we focused on:

For Community:
We get involved and take turns.
These children are taking turns on the monkey bars.

Mr Horn pushed in to have a go...

For Active Thinking:
We be a caring friend.

For Respect:
Listen, speak and show respect to others.

For Excellence:
Play safely
These children are using the slide properly

Madeline is getting down safely

Mr Horn is jumping off the playground and playing in the bushes... that's not safe Mr Horn...

Drawing a Kea Part 2

We finished our Kea art by colouring with wax crayons and using dye to paint the picture.

Hook: Making Butter

This weeks writing hook was making butter out of cream.

We put cream into a jam jar and shook it up. If the cream was cold it would have turned into whipped cream, but because it was room temperature we managed to make butter and buttermilk.

Buttermilk is great in pancakes, but we were more interested in the butter. It was smooth and easy to spread and it tasted great.

I Love Watermelon

Max, Matthew and Dion love watermelon.

So much they wrote a book about it. Not just a story, but a book. They made the pages, coloured them complete, wrote and illustrated and entertaining story about their love of watermelon.

Mr Horn was so impressed by how hard they had worked and how creative they had been he has now published the book. Each boy got a copy, as did Mrs Trotter and the school library.

If you would like to read "I Love Watermelon" by Max, Matthew and Dion it is in the school library, bound and barcoded under the letter W.

Erica the Bucket Filler

Erica was nominated by Room 20 to earn a Bucket Filler award for spotting a friend in need in the playground and inviting him to play with her. Well done Erica!

Hook: Ooblek

This week our hook for our writing is:

Ooblek!

This crazy stuff is made from mixed up cornflour and water, it feels strange, we had a great time playing with Ooblek and coming up with words to describe it for our writing.

If you would like to try making Ooblek at home, here is a video we used to learn about it:
