CARE & Our Learner Dispositions
Our Learner Dispositions are the tools that we use when the learning is challenging and we are in the Learning Pit.
What does a good learner do?
We have been talking together about what good learners do to be successful.
We watched some videos of people and animals who are demonstrate that they are amazing learners and achievers.
We made a chart with our own ideas about what good learners DO and what good learners SAY.
We learned about our value of Community
We learned about Community by Connecting with others and working Collaboratively.

Collaborative Learning
We began our first Collaborative Literacy session on Friday. The children had a range of must do and can do activities to complete.
Our first session was very successful and the children were all engaged with their learning.

Treehouse Treaty
During the Learning Plan Room 20 and Room 21 read a story called Tree House Treaty. We used the story to learn about:
Treehouse Treaty on PhotoPeach
- What to do if we have problems
- How we need to work together
- Including others
- The Treaty of Waitangi
We got into groups and had to work together to build a hut in the classroom that could fit our whole group and Keto inside it.
House Day Sports
We had so much fun with our Buddy Class, Room 13, on Friday morning as we completed a variety of team challenges. The smiles say it all, really!

Cybersafety - Hectors World
Over the past week we have spent time each day learning about how and why we should make sensible choices, if we are using computers.
We have used a great resource called Hector's World.
The concepts covered included:
We have used a great resource called Hector's World.
The concepts covered included:
- What is my personal information?
- Who are the people I can trust?
- What if something doesn't feel right? How do I know?
- Who should I go to for help if I am worried or if I want to share my personal information?
The videos we watched can be seen at this link
The children have been recording their ideas in a booklet that will come home in the next couple of days so that you can continue this learning at home.
What is Bullying?
As part of our Learning Plan, we talked about Bullying.
We discussed the following ideas.
We discussed the following ideas.
- Being mean or hurting another person is always unacceptable.
- Bullying Behaviour is when mean things are deliberately done over and over again to upset or hurt the same person. It is about a person continuing to mistreat another person.
- We only call it Bullying when the behaviour is directed at the same person over and over again.
To help our brains get warmed up for this discussion we watched the following video.
Collaboration in the Garden
On Thursday afternoon Rooms 20 & 21 spent time in the garden helping our community by:
- weeding,
- planting,
- gathering grass clippings for the compost
- watering the plants
- gathering sunflower seeds from the old sunflower heads for next season's planting
Our awesome team of gardeners worked collaboratively to get the jobs done.
Keto the Kea
Keto the Kea is the Kākano Team mascot and we spent time watching and discussing this video.
(We started watching at 4min 40 Seconds)
We identified the attributes of keas that we could use ourselves in our learning.
We also had fun watching and singing this song.
The Dot
Our focus on Wednesday was Perseverance and Effort.
We watched and discussed this video and then in the afternoon we created a collaborative painting.
The true "artwork" of this session was the joyful chatting between the children, especially those who have come from different 2014 classrooms.
The Learning Plan - Circles
We will be spending a lot of time sitting in Circles this year.
This might seem simple enough but Circles are much more than a simple seating arrangement.
Circles are a strategy we use to build our class culture,to develop a feeling of "being part of a team" and to ensure that all the children can be "at the front" during class discussions.

Today we played a co-operative game in a Circle.
The idea was to move Keto the Kea around the circle using only our legs. It was a little tricky and we really needed to work as team, pay attention and be ready for our turn, and think carefully about how we moved our legs.
We laughed a lot!
The Learning Plan - Bucket Filling
Today we talked about being a Bucket filler. We watched this video and then talked about
- How can we fill other people's buckets with happiness?
- What would we like other people to do to fill our buckets with happiness?
